Charleston West Virginia
Known as 'the most northern city of the South and the most
southern city of the North', the capital and largest city in West
Virginia, Charleston exudes all the charm and friendliness of a
small town. Located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha
Rivers, many pioneers began making their way out from their early
settlements after the American Revolutionary War, migrating towards
the western part of Virginia to capitalise on its resources such as
coal and natural gas.
Charleston is brimming with plenty of urban attractions and
amenities to cater to travellers' needs, yet is located just a
short drive from all the outdoor mountain adventure for anyone to
handle. Take a leisurely stroll along the water's edge past Capital
Complex on the Kanawha River, expand your mind at the Science
Museum, head to the Cultural Center to check out live performances
or spend your time admiring the Georgian, Queen Anne and Greek
Revival architecture in the East End Historical District, which is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of
Charleston's main highlights.
Nature lovers should visit the Kanawha State Forest, go hiking
or mountain biking along the trails peppered across the Greenbrier
River Trail, or take a drive along the Midland Scenic Trail where
the 120 miles (193 km) of breathtaking scenery provides plenty of
photo opportunities. The New River Gorge Bridge area features a few
great state parks where visitors can immerse themselves in
activities like hiking, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing and
mountain biking.
A major crossroads of West Virginia between the Midwest and east
and the south and north, Charleston makes the perfect stop for
travellers wanting a relaxing and revitalising break and is one
stop that is not to be missed.
