Edmonton
The capital of Alberta, Edmonton is often overlooked in favour
of its flashier neighbour, Calgary. Situated in the centre of the
province, Edmonton is relatively flat, despite coming within a few
hundred kilometres of the Rockies. The city is relatively sleepy in
comparison to Calgary, and has a small-town feel despite its
million-plus inhabitants.
Edmonton is perhaps best known as the site of the West Edmonton
Mall, the largest shopping centre in North America. However, there
are other attractions in Edmonton, including Fort Edmonton Park,
Canada's largest living history museum. There are more than 70
museums in Edmonton, including the Alberta Railway Museum, the
Telus World of Science, the Alberta Aviation Museum, and the Royal
Alberta Museum.
Edmonton also has a rich cultural life, with the Francis
Winspear Centre for Music hosting the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
and the Old Strathcona home to a number of theatre groups and the
Edmonton Fringe Festival. The city is home to a number of festivals
including Capital EX (formerly Klondike Days), the Edmonton Folk
Music Festival, and the Canadian Finals Rodeo.
Information & Facts
Climate
Edmonton has a fairly dry climate, with typically Canadian warm
summers and cold winters. Spring begins to warm up in late March,
with rapid temperature increases into April. The summers are warm
and sunny, with rainstorms in July. Autumn is between September and
November, with noticeably cooler temperatures.
Getting Around
Getting around in Edmonton occasionally requires strategic
planning. While the various neighbourhoods are relatively compact,
getting from one to the other can be a time-consuming process.
Public transportation is very good, with the Edmonton Transit
System and the Edmonton Light Rail Transit servicing nearly 300, 000
people every day.
Language
The official languages are English and French
(predominantly in Quebec).
Money
The currency used is the Canadian Dollar (CAD), which is divided
into 100 cents. One-dollar coins are also known as loonies (due to
the picture of a loon, a type of bird, on the coin), and two-dollar
coins as toonies. Banks and bureaux de change will change money and
travellers cheques, as will some hotels, but the rate will not be
as good. Major credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are
plentiful. US Dollars are largely accepted, though due to fraud,
larger notes might not be and change is usually given in Canadian
dollars.
Time
Canada covers six time zones, from GMT 8 in the west to GMT
-3.5 in the east.
