Inhaca Island
Situated almost 25 miles (40km) off the coast of Maputo, Inhaca
Island is an immensely popular African resort destination boasting
beautiful beaches, some of the Mozambique Channel's best coral
reefs, a historic lighthouse, marine biology museum and large areas
of protected forest. Easily accessible from the capital, it is a
favourite amongst snorkellers and divers who usually head for the
reefs at Santa Maria or to the lighthouse, or instead explore the
surrounding sunken wrecks. The Santa Maria reef has a strong drift
current that runs parallel to the shore and is fantastic for
snorkelling, while the Wall is a rocky ledge that drops 66ft (20m)
to the bottom and harbours numerous caves and ledges filled with a
variety of marine life. Game fishing is also popular on Inhaca
Island.
Information & Facts
Activities
Inhaca is a paradise for scuba diving, along with water sports
like waterskiing, parasailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking and
sailing, along with big-game fishing and more relaxing activities
like sunset cruises. The island is ringed with beautiful beaches,
and visitors can also take a boat across to the deserted Portuguese
Island. The resort has a tennis court and swimming pool, and
excursions can be arranged to the biology station, light house
beach, the mangrove swamps, as well as the Santa Maria Wall. There
are a few villages to visit as well.
Language
Portuguese is the official language, and there are 13
main national languages spoken. English is taught in secondary
schools, but is only spoken in the southern tourist
regions.
Money
The official currency is the New Metical (MZN), which is divided
into 100 centavos. In the southern parts of the country, South
African Rand, US Dollars and Pounds Sterling are also accepted to
pay for accommodation. Credit cards are accepted in some upmarket
hotels in Maputo, but facilities throughout the rest of the country
are limited; it is advisable to carry cash or travellers cheques.
ATMs are limited and tend to be unreliable, but local banks have
branches in most cities.
Negatives
Inhaca has no nightlife, and there are few shopping and
restaurant options. The beaches are occasionally inundated with
Portuguese Man-O-Wars.
Night Life
There is no nightlife on Inhaca Island, though the lodge has a
bar.
Restaurants
Restaurants on Inhaca are mostly limited to the lodge, however
the nearby village has a takeaway burger stand and an attached
seafood restaurant.
Shopping
The small village near the lodge has a few small shops selling
typical tourist tat like sarongs and seashells.
